Let Them Eat Cake!

"...Let them eat cake..." is widely attributed to Marie-Antoinette (1755-93), the Queen consort of Louis XVI. She is credited with this remark when she was told that the French populace had no bread to eat. If any reader knows more about the history of that quote, please let me know!

Cooker Cake is Great Cake!

Please Note: I have seen a cake similar to this on Food Network. This is slightly different, but I did want to give them credit for a similar recipe.

If you want an easy cake, and have a few minutes to dump these ingredients into a slow cooker, and then have strong will power to let it cook, while you try to ignore the delicious aroma, this is a hit.

My kids love it, and even though they will eat anything that isn't going to bite back, their eyes roll back in their heads when I mention I'm bringing this dessert. We've nicknamed it "Cooker Cake," and it's the easiest thing in the world to prepare. A busy person's dream.

As with many of my favorite dishes, there is a story behind this one.

Parenting many moody kids, we found that something great from the kitchen changed most any disposition. This cooker cake was a particular favorite of one of our young foster boys. His mood would improve for hours when he ate his favorite foods. I've found that food calms stressful spirits and can promote friendly discussions!

Adults know this and enjoy nights out on the town with friends over dinner, drinks and conversation. Sometimes, we can forget that kids react positively to the same atmosphere, right around the dinner table at home.

Johnny, one of our foster children, frequently suffered from depression, and while there is some danger to fostering obesity, by rewarding kids with food, I'm for anything that's safe first. and works, second.

A long walk or brisk game can take care of the calories.

You're going to increase your success with happiness in the home if you deal with feelings first and facts second. Deal with spin off behavior problems when everyone has calmed down. Personally, I found wise and sensible "bribery" to be healthy for needy kids, who are not used to receiving good things.

Let Them Eat Cake!

One word of warning: As this cooks in the slow cooker, PREPARE TO DROOL. It'll be so hard NOT to sneak a bite. Resist, Resist. Serve it with vanilla bean ice cream for a real moaning moment.

Cherries and Pears go great together, but blueberries and raspberries go great too. Apples and peaches? Experiment! Keep to the pie filling of one chosen fruit, and fruit in syrup for the 2nd choice.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 15oz can diced pears packed in syrup
  • 1 tsp almond extract, or vanilla (almond's best, but experiment)
  • 1 box cherry, or strawberry cake mix (or white, or spice, yellow)
  • 1 stick butter, (1/2 cup) chopped, unsalted is best
  • 1 small envelope of maple and brown sugar instant oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup favorite chopped nuts (almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, or pecans or a mixture of all of the above.)

Procedure:

  • Spray your 5 qt slow cooker with butter flavored cooking spray.
  • Combine pie filling, pears and almond or vanilla extract in a separate bowl and pour into slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle the cake mix - dry- over the fruit mixture.
  • Dot with chopped butter. Sprinkle oatmeal mixture and nuts over cake mix.

Don't skip this next step! Place 8 -10 dry paper towels over slow cooker bowl and then place lid on cooker. The paper towels will help trap the steam that forms as the cake cooks.

Cook on Low setting for 4 to 6 hours: DO NOT LIFT LID TO CHECK ON CAKE OR SNEAK A BITE. This changes the cooking temperature and the cake can become soggy.

I know it's tempting, but let it cook alone at least for the first 4 hours. Dip with large spoon into a bowl.

Tip:  To cut some of the sweetness, add pears that are packed in natural juice, no sugar added.  This current recipe IS very sweet.

Turn out the lights, light the candles, put on some coffee or hot tea, and get out the vanilla bean ice cream. Sweet conversation and sweet cake, melting in your mouth, does it get any better?

The rest is up to you! Shhhhh. I can't do everything.

And I thought there would be a cake looking like me on this hub!!!!! Oh well, I guess it will have to be just a cake then. :P It sounds delicious. I couldn;t actuasly read what you wrote other than the recipe. There is an ad in the way of your text.

CJStone 3 years ago

You had me drooling just thinking about it. One thing though, for your British readers, how much, exactly, is a stick of butter? I haven't got a slow cooker or I'd be out to buy the ingredients now!

JamaGenee 3 years ago

A stick of butter is 1/2 (half) a cup, CJ, which is 8 Tablespoons.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Sir Dent, I'll work on re-arranging the hub, -- may be I need to do something with the text boxes. hmmmm a techo problemo lol

JamaGenee, you answered CJ beautifully, thank you! This cake is so good and

you can use different fruit pie fillings...such as applie pie filling with a spice cake mix for the top. It's so easy! Be prepared to drool...just smelling it makes my mouth water.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

any suggestions as to how to move the google ad down??

SirDent 3 years ago

Maybe put a photo or something up near the top. I don't know why Google is doing that.

Maybe formatting your text different will fix it. From the looks of thew text you Copied then Pasted it into the hub from a word pad. All I can say is try it and see. I know sometimes when I paste from a word pad it messes up and I have to work on reformatting the text.

RUTHIE17 3 years ago

Sounds good--will definitely give it a try! A real "thumbs upper"!.

About the formatting--maybe if you single spaced in the mods and then double spaced between them? Also, pictures or Amazon would help to break it up and might help with the format too. Worth a try!

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Yep, that's what I did, and it also is double spacing with the lines...eeek LOL

SirDent 3 years ago

Try format 3 then paragraph. That's usually what I have to do to get everything in the right order.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

THANK YOU...that will help with other hubs too. I hope this one looks better!!

SirDent 3 years ago

It looks totally awesome now. I can actually read what you wrote before the recipe. :D

marisuewrites 3 years ago

yeaaaaa Thanks for you help!!

JamaGenee 3 years ago

Like SirDent said, it looks great now! I also had the same problem pasting text, and had to format it several different ways before it looked "right". Oddly tho, what worked for one block of text wouldn't always work in the next. Chalked it up to yet another instance of Microsoft not playing well with others.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Very True!! It can get so aggravating, I'm glad it's not just me...I thought I was doing something really wrong, but it's basically not understanding the way things work together, within the word processors. try try again!! lol thanks for your patience and help, everyone!

rmr 3 years ago

I thought I had put my slow cooker to every possible use, but I stand corrected! This sounds incredible!

marisuewrites 3 years ago

rmr, I know, and I have more slow cooker dessert recipes, I'm going to dig them out -- people really liked them and I think they'll be well received here. Empty nesting has caused me to stroll down memory lane, I've remembered that many problems are solved with good times in the kitchen. Kids and distressed people find comfort with good smells from the oven, it sounds so simple, even incredible...but it works! Of course, it doesn't cure everything, but it provides a solid stage to do so...

Patty Inglish, MS 3 years ago

So sweet, the sound of it makes my mouth hurt, but that's what black coffee is for! I can smell it already. :) Never heard of this one before.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

I tried to take the calories out of it and decided Oh, well....just go for a long walk the next day. LOL

glycodoc 3 years ago

Reminds me of a cake my mother use to make - called "Better Than Sex" cake. Will have to try yours and then take a really long walk!

marisuewrites 3 years ago

glycodoc, I've heard of that cake...haha  Yes, this cake will clog the arteries if you're not taking your fish oil and doing the daily walks.  We know better than to eat this and sleep afterwards now.

Thanks so much for reading!

Constant Walker 3 years ago

This sounds incredible and have already sent the recipe to me mum - I don't have a slow cooker... yet!

I didn't see any problems with the Google ads and text, but maybe you've fixed it already.  Could have also been SirDent's browser...

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Hi there Constant! I couldn't get the format text right, but kept fiddling with it...I wonder how we can create larger font? I struggle sometimes moving things up and down, it's fixed now...=)

Dottie1 3 years ago

Marisue....How could anyone not try this cake. (A busy persons dream) (just dump the ingredients into slow cooker) Now your talking. I wrote out ingredients and immediately put on the shopping list. Well today was the day to "Let Them Eat Cake". I made the one with cherry pie filling, pears in syrup and a white cake mix. It was scrumpdidilitious topped with vanilla bean icecream and whipped topping which just automatically goes with icecream. My family voted next one would be apple pie filling, peaches and spice cake. Thanks Marisue for this winner cake recipe.

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Hi Dottie -- thanks for the good review...it's a favorite here and sooo easy. Cooker cake (almost a cobbler really) was voted #1 with all those kids!! LOL

the hot fudge receipe was 2nd...both sooo easy and we all are so buy anymore. I love easy! You are so right about the varieties...this one is great almost no matter what you combine.

soo glad you enjoyed it and thanks for putting your comment here! =0

level1diet 3 years ago

Looks delish! Problem is, I can't eat this cake or pie, or anything like it ever again... unless I cheat on my Level1Diet.com program, of course. ;-)

marisuewrites 3 years ago

Good news! I found sugar free Cherry Pie filling (there are probably other flavors as well) - sugar free cake mix with splenda, and you could use fruit packed in natural juices. Then, you're home free other than the small amount of brown sugar in the topping! See? Now you can eat this delicious cobbler cake.

Trust your sis to solve the problem!

Vondre 3 years ago

Yumo, I'm trying it tonight!!!!!!

marisuewrites 20 months ago

Hi Montana Farm Girl...it is good, kinda sweet, but yummy, you can change the fruit around, use more lightly sweetened pie fillings...the sky's the limit!
