Happy Birthday Obama! It's OK For Obama To Change His Mind
When did you last change your mind? I probably do it every few minutes on any day:
- One moment I want a burger, the next I've changed to tacos, and then settle for chicken.
- In the morning I take down my black polo, change to the white, then settle on the green.
- For lunch, I'll have yogurt, add a cookie, and then some crackers and cheese, when my original desire was to eat chicken salad.
- When deciding on a marketing project, I may want to promote a 50% off offer, eliminate the first month free, only to add it to the coupon at the last minute.
- I know I've hung a palm tree picture in at least 6 places before I found the one I like.
- Then, last but not least, I'll decide no more writing for the day, only to publish at least 2 more hubs, and 3 blogs on my other personal webites.
- On, and one more (see, changing my mind even now...) Don't even mention the grocery store, where I can stand in front of the meat market for 15 minutes mentally going through recipes and 8 ways to prepare hamburger meat, only to then choose a pork roast.
What's the point of all of this? We ALL change our mind. Information comes to us all throughout the day, and we change directions accordingly. That's normal and shows you are alert.
Obama did not invent the flip flop! (Was it Gore? no, wait, that was the Internet.)
We all know where a stubborn disposition leads us. We've seen how "I'm doing it my way no matter what" pays off. We know all about "stay the course, even if...." We know what a naked emperor looks like and it's not a pretty sight.
We know a stubborn "stick to your guns Annie Oakley" attitude takes us to dark places such as a war that will never end, and a Middle East now in even more wicked turmoil.
I'm thinking that some ability to listen to advisors; learn new things and have that change a leader's mind is going to be very refreshing. It could even be so good for us that we'll regain some lost ground in the area of worldly respect.
I am beginning to like flip floppers!
What are some things you "used" to believe? Here's one for me: I used to have more respect for elected officials, and due to observations and information coming into my mind over the last few years...maybe 15 or so, I've begun to flip flop. I now tend to believe that most owe too many people too many favors and most are going to do what it takes to pay those favors back, and put the rest of the bucks in their pocket.
I flip flop on a few other topics; I used to think I'd never write a book, and now I'm working on 3. I used to think friends would never betray you, but being grown up I've found that some do. I used to believe that cats were better than dogs, but now I couldn't do without either.
I used to think I would never age, but found out that even I am vulnerable to the clock, despite strong dependence on moisturizers, and Clairol Hair Coloring.
So, when Obama decides we might need to dip into our oil reserve, I believe it's because he's been listening to someone besides the reporters who keep a tally of his statements.
When Obama says he's going to get us out of Iraq in 18 months if the ground conditions warrant it, I don't think he's saying he will or he won't no matter what. He's going to do what he has to do, but he's stating his general direction.
I don't see it as a flip flop but the press just can't let it go and neither can quick to distract Republicans. They scream and rant about it, totally ignoring that not only does McCain change his mind on issues, he often can't complete his thoughts or remember what he said, much less stating accurately what country borders Iraq or Pakistan.
That could be important if you're sending in troops or bombs, or are zooming in for a look-see. Even if he's got others to do his bidding, it's pretty important to know which country is where, don't you think?
Aren't you weary of the press calling every variation of Obama's a Flip Flop?
I don't want a :President being weak on decisions, but we don't want one hanging on to a wrong one for dear life, either. Our oil situation is a "slick" one and decisions may have to change frequently if we're going to change this mess.
Obama is going to surround himself with experts and advisors and he seems to be intelligent enough to listen to them. He even gave T. Boone Pickens a boost in mentioning alternatives to oil. Good for them both.
America, stay tuned for solutions! I believe we're closer than ever, if we can step over the press' golden tongue, and the misguidance of McCain.
Obama, we're listening and we're grinning. At last!!

Marisue What good is a mind if you can't change it. Interesting hub. Interesting premise. I am not going to encourage you to keep writing because you don't need encouragement any more. I think I should rather be saying whoa! slow down, pick your cherries. You cretainly have a barrelful of varied ones.
When I hear reporters say "flip-flop", I think of George Bush Sr. (No New Taxes!) and Bill Clinton who said that once he got into office and saw how bad things really were, he was going to have to raise taxes to fix it, but at least he asked us first if we wanted it. For some reason, we said 'yes', and down went the deficit.
I change my mind like I change my clothes. My friends never believe I'm actuallly coming when we make plans. They know it all depends on how I feel that day, even if I promise faithfully I will be there. My moods are very amorphous, so I'm not known as someone you can count on for fun, although I am reliable for serious business.
